Bulgarian PM Glavchev confirms no troop deployment to Ukraine, stresses NATO's defensive role

Caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev has said that no Bulgarian soldiers will be sent to Ukraine and that NATO has no intention of sending troops there. Glavchev answered questions from the press and citizens during a live broadcast on Facebook. He  reiterated his commitment to implementing the decisions of the Bulgarian Parliament without overstepping his powers, especially on issues related to Ukraine.

"I am implementing the decisions of Parliament. I strictly follow them without going beyond them. I don't have any such powers, and I am mandated to act as the National Assembly voted to act on Ukraine," Glavchev said. 

He stressed that NATO is a collective defence organisation and not an alliance of aggressors. He also said that at the Washington meeting it was reaffirmed that NATO will continue to support Ukraine against Russia's aggressive actions as long as Ukraine seeks this support. He said that peace must be based on international law and the United Nations Charter, with the aim of achieving a lasting and sustainable peace.

On the issue of a Bulgarian Commissioner in the new European Commission, Glavchev said that there were no current discussions on the allocation of portfolios for a Bulgarian Commissioner in the new European Commission, as it was considered too early for such talks.
