Growing number of Bulgarian lawyers looking for work abroad

An increasing number of lawyers, although registered with the Bulgarian Bar Association, are working remotely for foreign companies or law firms, or even emigrating and settling permanently outside the country, reports the online edition of lex.bg.

Officially, there is no way of knowing the number of these lawyers because they are not obliged to deregister from local bar associations or to declare to the Bar Association that they are working abroad, the media outlet said.

Reasons for going abroad include lower-than-expected earnings for lawyers at home. At the same time, the unification of EU law and the elimination of differences in legislation is encouraging foreign law firms from other EU member states, which are understaffed, to try to attract Bulgarian lawyers. Most Bulgarian lawyers are fluent in one or more EU languages.
