Government considers measures to tackle 'traffic jams' at Danube bridge to Romania

Miles-long queues at the Danube Bridge border crossing at Ruse, where trucks have been stuck for up to 30 hours, were discussed by Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev, Interior Minister Atanas Ilkov, Transport and Communications Minister Krasimira Stoyanova and Regional Development Minister Violeta Koritarova.

Glavchev is adamant that heavy vehicle flows should be divided into two streams - one for those from EU member states and the other for those from third countries. To achieve this, an organisation will be set up before crossing the border.

Discussions will be resumed with the Romanian authorities on the establishment of a ro-ro Ruse-Giurgiu-Ruse service, which would ease traffic on the bridge.

It is recalled that a major repair of the Bulgarian section of the 70-year-old structure started on 10 July.
