The Council of Ministers has granted the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant a derogation from the European regulation on restrictive measures in light of Russia's actions in Ukraine. With this derogation, Bulgaria's only nuclear power plant and its largest electricity producer will be able to import iron and steel products from Russia under specific contracts. The import of goods and technologies from Russia, as well as the provision of related technical assistance, is also permitted. The derogation will remain in effect until the expiration of the contracts in question.
The main priority in the operation of the Kozloduy NPP is to maintain the highest levels of technical and nuclear safety, as well as to protect the environment. Since a large portion of the nuclear power plant's systems and equipment is of a Russian origin, some contracts for the supply of goods and services related to annual maintenance and the reliable and safe operation of Units 5 and 6 of the Kozloduy NPP, have been signed or need to be signed with Russian contractors, the government press service explained.
