For the first time in 38 years the population of Bulgaria has practically stopped its downward trend. In 2023 the decline is by a mere 0.3%, or just 2,229 people, indicate data from the demographic development strategy for last year. At the end of 2023, Bulgaria had a population of 6,445,481. The deaths-to-births ratio in 2023 was 43,809, i.e. the natural growth rate of the population of the country declined by 43,809 people. At the same time, however, 56,807 immigrants were added to the population of Bulgaria, of whom 41,580 have remained in the country permanently.

25% of the new Bulgarians for 2023 come from Turkey – 14,000 Bulgarian Turks. In second position at 17.5% or 9,657 people come from Ukraine, and in third position - 5,680 people – from Russia. This explains why the steepest mechanical population growth rate has been registered in Kardzhali, Burgas and Varna.
