Bulgaria has today received its first delivery of natural gas from the new Alexandroupolis terminal in Greece. The facility has been in commercial operation since 1 October this year and Bulgaria owns 20% of the project, which diversifies LNG supplies to Southeast and Central Europe.

The state-of-the-art facility has a maximum regasification capacity of 5.5 billion cubic metres per year. The gas pipeline can also supply Romania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Moldova and Ukraine to the east and Hungary and Slovakia to the west.

Sofia's decision to become a shareholder is seen as strategic in view of possible supplies from the US, Qatar, Egypt and other producers. It is also part of a strategy by the countries of south-eastern Europe to diversify away from Russian gas.
