The mission of the awakeners is a unique, entirely Bulgarian spiritual category – awakeners, a word imbued with the wisdom and the spiritual might of our people, the centuries-old pursuit of advancement and freedom, said Bulgarian President Rumen Radev at a ceremony on the occasion of National Awakeners’ Day. An awakener is not necessarily a person of intellectual labour, they can be anyone who, in words and deeds, brings enlightenment to those around and humbly serves their people, the president said.

Rumen Radev thanked the representatives of the arts, teachers and enlighteners dedicated to their noble mission. Earlier in the day the national flag was hoisted in front of the presidency building, and Rumen Radev saluted the National Guard.

The ceremony was attended by National Assembly President Raya Nazaryan, caretaker PM Dimitar Glavchev, Patriarch Daniil, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, officials from the public institutions, academia. They were all greeted by the children from kindergarten No. 124 Burborino
