The decision to scrap Schengen border checks by land for Bulgaria and Romania has been included as the first item on the agenda of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting on Thursday, 12 December.

The decision is expected to be endorsed at around 11 AM Bulgarian time. By force of the draft decision, approved unanimously by the ambassadors of the EU countries at the end of November, the land border checks will be lifted as of 1 January, 2025. The Council of the EU decision comes after last week the government of the Netherlands announced it would support Bulgaria and Romania.
