An exhibition titled: "International Bat Night at the Museum: From Myths and Legends to Science and Personal Experience" will open today at the EcoMuseum & Aquarium in Ruse. The exhibition will present the museum's initiatives dedicated to bats over the past 20 years. “The aim to tell little-known facts about these flying mammals in an engaging and accessible way – what they are, how they feed and how they navigate in the dark”, curator Krasimir Kirov said.

He also reveals some myths about bats: “In folk mythology, it is believed that if you take a bat wing, grind it into powder and add it to your food, it acts as an aphrodisiac. Or if you put a bat wing in the clothes of someone you love, they will become attracted to you the way a bat clings to a wall".

33 of the possible 35 species of bats in Europe are found in Bulgaria. These flying mammals are extremely useful because they feed on insects that cause damage on agriculture. Bats in also help in the fight against mosquitoes. One bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes per night.
