A review of all border checkpoints has been conducted and active cooperation is underway with all institutions responsible for the border crossing points in connection with Bulgaria's entry into Schengen, caretaker Minister of Interior Atanas Ilkov said during a ceremony honoring employees of the General Directorate Border Police who excelled during the year, reported BNR's correspondent Rumyana Vasileva. The ceremony was held on the occasion of the 137th anniversary of the adoption of the first Border Guard Act in Bulgaria.

Minister Ilkov noted that from January 1, 2025, when Bulgaria enters Schengen by land, there will checks on the Bulgaria-Romania border, but they will be random and based on a risk analysis. When there is information about suspicious individuals or vehicles, they will be taken off the traffic flow and checked at specially designated areas.

''We are ready to face the challenge of protecting our borders in a new way after our country's accession to Schengen", said Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, Director of the General Directorate Border Police.
