Citizens demand humane conditions in municipal animal shelters

Animal protection organizations protested in front of the Sofia Municipality, demanding humane treatment in municipal shelters. Environmentalists point out that the dogs are suffering in the cold, crammed into shared cages where they end up eating each other due to a lack of food. There is a shortage of staff and medical care. At the same time, volunteers are not allowed. Four dogs have died there in the last two weeks and one of them was left to agonize for hours. 

The organizations have prepared a statement to Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, but there has been no solution to the problem. According to representatives of the Intimate With Nature Society, the funding for the shelters is more than sufficient, around EUR 2.5 million, but the conditions in the shelters are horrifying. The protesters are demanding immediate measures and the resignation of the interim director the Ekoravnovesie municipal enterprise, Dimitar Dimitrov.
