Following the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area, the work of the control institutions has become much broader and more responsible, said Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, director of the Border Police. Zlatanov added that controls at Bulgaria's internal borders with Romania and Greece would continue with compensatory measures, including risk-based analysis and random checks.

"We will not allow migrant pressure on the Bulgarian-Greek border under any circumstances," he said. Some border police officers will be transferred to the Bulgarian-Turkish border, which will become an external Schengen border.

Teams from the Border Police, the Customs Agency and the National Revenue Agency are already stationed at car parks near the Struma motorway, close to the Greek border, and within a 30-kilometre zone along major roads. These checks are being carried out in places that will not disrupt free movement, reports BNR correspondent Keti Trencheva.
