New Year Eve aftermaths

Dead Bird Count in Koprivshtitsa Surpasses 1,000

One thousand seven dead and 31 injured birds is the result of the New Year's Eve fireworks in the town of Koprivshtitsa, Dr Hristina Klisurova of the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Centre told BNR. Half of the surviving Bramblings (Fringilla montifringilla) have permanent disabilities and will not be able to return to the wild.

The necropsy shows that the death of the mountain finches was caused by stress. Massive haemorrhaging was found in the birds' abdomens and skulls.

"A few days before the New Year, a huge flock of thousands of Bramblings had settled on the outskirts of the town. There are pictures that show the whole sky blackened. It was just an unfortunate coincidence," Dr Klisurova told BNR, explaining why there were so many deaths in Koprivshtitsa.

"We like to have fun, but we don't need to turn the place into a war zone," she urged.
