Possible inflation rise due to the higher price of bread and electricity – this is what the President of the National Statistical Institute, Atanas Atanasov, predicted in an interview with BTA.

"In the first days of the year we see that bread producers and restaurateurs are already raising prices in connection with the rise of VAT for their products and we could also expect an increase in inflation in the country. Moreover, bread and derived products have a large weight in the consumer basket. The change in the price of electricity will certainly have an impact on inflation," the head of NSI said.

Since the beginning of the year, the price of electricity has been raised by 9% and VAT on bread is again 20%. Previously VAT on bread was zero, as the measure was introduced during the Covid epidemic.

New goods and services will enter the consumer basket of inflation, monitored by the statistical institute. Among the new additions are dryer machines and lunch coupons in school cafeteria, Atanas Atanasov said.
