Inflation up 29.9 per cent since 2021, bread prices up 43.3 per cent

An analysis by experts from the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) shows that the cumulative growth of inflation (measured by the Consumer Price Index) over the last four years (from the beginning of 2021 until now) is exactly 29.9%

However, this is an average indicator that often does not reflect the real level of personal inflation for each consumer. For this reason, inflation is often looked at for individual items in the small consumer basket. This, experts say, gives an idea of the real purchasing power of the majority of people.

The cumulative inflation for bread and cereals alone over the same period was 43.3%. Since the introduction of zero VAT, bread has become between 1% and 11% cheaper in the short term, but in the long term its price is rising, the union said.
