The Sofia MENAR Festival presents films dedicated to art in a selection entitled MENARt, BTA reports. On January 25, at the Cinema House, director Markus Schmidt will personally present his film “Le Mali 70”. After the screening, he will stand in the DJ booth at Cush Bar and together with Tsvetan Tsvetanov from “Alarma Punk Jazz”, they will delight the audience with a special set of African rhythms.
Le Mali 70 is about a group of Berlin musicians who find old gramophone records with performances by African jazz bands from the 70s. Their discovery takes them to Mali, where they search for the musicians of the vinyl treasures. There they come across a priceless archive from the times when the music scene was on the rise before the regime completely wiped it out. The Germans start working together with the former greats in Salif Keita's studio in Bamako in an attempt to revive this wealth.
