A joint contingent of officers from Bulgaria, Austria, Romania and Hungary has begun work that will strengthen the security of Bulgaria's border with Türkiye, which is now external to Schengen. Minister of the Interior of Romania - Cătălin Predoiu, and Minister of the Interior of Hungary - Sándor Pinter, as well as a delegation led by Franz Ruf, Director General for Public Security at the Federal Ministry of Interior of Austria, arrived in Bulgaria especially for the event.
At the official ceremony, Minister of the Interior of Bulgaria, Daniel Mitov, said that the joint contingent was a sign of true European solidarity. "Migrants and traffickers stand no chance at the Bulgarian-Turkish border," he pointed out when signing the agreement for the joint contingent. According to Mitov, the migrant flow through the country was decreasing, BNR Stara Zagora reported.
The deployment of the joint contingent on the border with Türkiye was agreed in December 2024 and written down in a joint declaration by the interior ministers of the four countries at their meeting in Budapest. Minister Mitov pointed out that there was no deadline for the work of the contingent.
