A stroll in the Lakatitsa section of Bulgaria's Rila Mountain in winter

If you are looking for a destination for a pleasant walk in the heart of the mountain, you can choose the Lakatitsa section of the Rila Mountain. We suggest you start from the village of Govedartsi near Samokov. The river of Cherni Osam runs alongside the village as the Lakatitsa River flows into Cherni Osam river near the village. This is where the name to this part of the lower part of Northwestern Rila comes from.


From here, on a steep slope, in about an hour and a half one can reach the Saint Elijah chapel.


Traditionally, locals gather here on July 20, when the Bulgarian Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Prophet Elijah, and offer a sacrifice in his honor to protect them from disasters.


On the meadow in front of the chapel there is a gazebo with tables and benches and you can have a wonderful picnic. From here, a fabulous panorama opens up, which makes us remember the words of writer Aleko Konstantinov, although they were said about another Bulgarian region: "Look around!... At this moment, will anyone sigh for Tyrol and Switzerland, so that I can smack them on the mouth!... Gentlemen! Look, look at this beautiful scenery, look at these wonders...".

It is winter, but we are reminded of it here and there by the remaining snow patches and the white caps on the high peaks opposite.


You can also hike to the nearby 1,495-meter-high Tapankovitsa peak hidden among coniferous trees.


From here, satisfied, rested and happy, head back to the village of Govedartsi.


Before you enter the village, a beautiful pastoral picture awaits you, which adds even more bright colors to the memory of the wonderful walk through the Bulgarian beauty Rila.
