Student protesters in Serbia call for a general strike

Student protests against the government and President Aleksandar Vucic continue in Serbia for the fourth month. In an appeal on Instagram, the protesters called on all citizens to join them in a general strike on March 7. The protests were sparked by an incident on November 1, 2024, when a concrete canopy collapsed at the Novi Sad railway station, killing 15 people. The tragedy sparked a wave of social discontent against the government and the president.

The Serbian parliament has adopted legislative changes that halve student fees, increase the higher education budget by 20%, and introduce preferential housing loans for young people. According to the Speaker of Parliament, Ana Brnabić, the changes to the law on higher education will calm the protesters and encourage them to lift the blockade of over 60 faculties, which began at the end of November 2024.

The law was supposed to be considered on March 4, but then clashes broke out in the plenary hall and the opposition threw smoke bombs. During the fighting scenes in parliament, three MPs were injured.
