Bulgaria declares day of national mourning for victims in North Macedonia

Tuesday will be a day of national mourning as an expression of solidarity with our closest neighbour in the Balkans, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced. A fire at a disco in the North Macedonian city of Kočani killed 59 people and injured 155 more.

The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. “In such moments, it is most important to show timely empathy and solidarity. Bulgaria is ready to take care of more victims,” he said. 14 people injured in the fire are already being treated in hospitals in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna.

Up-to-date information on the condition of the victims will be provided in the medical institutions: for “N. I. Pirogov” at 8:00 and 13:30 in front of the Intensive Care Unit of the Burn Clinic, for the Varna Hospital at the Military Medical Academy – at 9:00 and 12:00, and for the St. George University Hospital Plovdiv – from 8:30 to 9:00 and from 17:00 to 17:30.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has opened a 24-hour telephone line 02/ 8050 300, which provides information about the medical institution where the patients transported to Bulgaria are accommodated.
