Bulgaria cannot intervene in the espionage case against Bulgarian citizens in the UK. This was stated by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov during parliamentary question time, in response to a question from the Velichie party. "Criminal justice is carried out under the jurisdiction of the country where the crime was committed," Zhelyazkov said.
Five Bulgarians - Orlin Rusev, Biser Dzhambazov, Katrin Ivanova, Ivan Stoyanov and Vanya Gaberova - have been charged with conspiring to obtain or exchange information between August 2020 and February 2023 that could be - or was intended to be - "directly or indirectly useful for a purpose prejudicial to the security and interests of the United Kingdom".
