May 24 will be declared Bulgarian Heritage Day by the Mayor of Las Vegas, Shelley Berkley, Bulgaria's Consulate General in Los Angeles announced.

The official meeting between the new mayor of the largest and most popular city in the state of Nevada and the Consul General of Bulgaria in Los Angeles, Boyko Hristov, was described by the Bulgarian diplomatic mission as "an important step in strengthening Bulgarian-American cultural and community ties in Nevada."

Boyko Hristov stressed that the Bulgarian community is "an active and well-integrated part of the social and cultural fabric of Las Vegas." Ms. Berkley committed to issuing a proclamation declaring May 24 as Bulgarian Cultural Heritage Day in Las Vegas. On the occasion, the facade of City Hall will be illuminated in the colors of the Bulgarian national flag.

This is not the first time that Bulgaria's most popular holiday has been recognised as a Bulgarian Cultural Heritage Day in Las Vegas. Similar proclamations were issued by the previous mayor in the past two years, and in 2023, members of the Bulgarian community even visited City Hall on May 24.

During her meeting with Bulgarian Consul General Boyko Hristov, Mayor Shelley Berkley learned about the rescue of nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews during World War II. She also received a catalogue of the Getty Museum's Ancient Thrace and the Classical World exhibition.

At City Hall, Hristov recognised a painting by Las Vegas-based Bulgarian artist Valentin Yordanov. He also met with Clark County Commission Chairman Tick Segerblom to discuss future cooperation.
