Urban birds are the best indicator of the surrounding environment

The campaign of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds for counting sparrows in the country has ended. For the ninth consecutive year, volunteers had the opportunity to observe sparrows in a place of their choice and then record their number on the online platform birds.bg.

The organizers point out that this data is important because urban birds are the best indicator of the environment we live in. For example, data show a significant decline in the populations of sparrows. This indicates the presence of chemicals that destroy the food of sparrows - insects. In addition, sparrows react to smaller amounts of pollutants, which are fatal for them and toxic for humans, ornithologists from the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds point out.
