GERB leader Boyko Borissov told journalists that "the National Assembly should categorically reject the proposal for a referendum". According to Borissov, "it should not even be considered because it is unconstitutional".

In Borissov's words, this issue was settled long ago by an international treaty that Bulgaria agreed to when it adopted the euro. The GERB leader said that on the one hand, President Radev was in favour of the euro and on the other, he wanted to use people's fears to break the ruling majority.

Borissov pointed out that "if a referendum is allowed, our country can forget about the eurozone" and expressed his belief that "the outstretched hands for unity will be stronger than Rumen Radev's fist".
