Led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, the Bulgarian delegation is visiting Rome and the Vatican on 22 and 23 May 2025. Traditionally held on the eve of 24 May, the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, the Bulgarian alphabet, enlightenment, culture and Slavonic literature, the visit sees the Bulgarian representatives pay tribute to the holy places associated with the work of the first teachers and Bulgaria.
Today, the delegation laid wreaths at the monument of national hero Captain Petko Voyvoda and at the monument to writer Ivan Vazov, the patriarch of Bulgarian literature. Later today, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, as reported by BNR's Rome correspondent, Tsvetelina Stoyanova.
On 23 May, Zhelyazkov will be received by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for an audience at the Apostolic Palace, after which he will meet with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
