PM Zhelyazkov: We’re past the time for political debates on the euro

The government will not debate the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria, said Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov at a discussion organised by the Economic and Social Council of the Republic of Bulgaria. He added that all responsible politicians and institutions are aware of where Bulgaria stands and what needs to be done. He recalled that the political debate on the issue began in 1997 and concluded in 2005, when Bulgaria signed the Treaty of Accession to the EU.

President refers rejected euro referendum request to Constitutional Court

The Prime Minister said that the government is taking measures to stop speculation and prevent price rises before Bulgaria joins the eurozone. The government's goal is to ensure that income growth outpaces inflation.

Today, the Constitutional Court announced that it had opened a case following President Rumen Radev's request to invalidate the Speaker of the National Assembly, Natalia Kiseleva's, refusal to submit his proposal for a referendum to parliament. The proposed question for the referendum is: “Do you agree that Bulgaria should adopt the euro as its currency in 2026?”
