The Ministry of Culture is expecting UNESCO to approve, by the end of 2025, the application of the Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Sozopol as a regional centre for underwater archaeology in the Black Sea region. The centre will be located entirely on the territory of the Saints Quiricus and Julietta Island, the director of the institution Dr. Nayden Prahov told the Bulgarian news agency BTA. He is taking part in the forum “Brand Sozopol and the relics of the Baptist” in Sozopol. The forum was opened by Vice President Iliana Iotova, and was joined by representatives of the Ministry of Culture, the local authorities, the clergy, the tourism industry, scholars and archaeologists. The aim of the regional centre is to coordinate joint actions with the other Black Sea countries and develop initiatives for preserving, studying and popularizing the underwater heritage under the UNESCO convention.
