The European Commission has officially added 'Strandzhanski bilkov chay' (Strandzha Herbal Tea) to the European Union's Register of Geographical Indications. As of 2 June 2025, this unique Bulgarian tea has been granted Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status.

The tea is made from the leaves and flowers of a plant from the Sideritis genus (family Lamiaceae). It is cultivated only in areas with suitable exposure and alkaline soils, specifically in five municipalities in the Strandzha area: Malko Tarnovo, Primorsko, Sozopol, Sredets and Tsarevo.

It is distinguished by its mildly sweet flavour, delicate aromatic bouquet, and high antioxidant and phenolic compound content. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, it is used not only as a beverage but also as a natural remedy with proven antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Following the registration of Strandzha Herbal Tea, Bulgaria now has six protected foods in the EU: three with Protected Designation of Origin — Strandzhanski manov med (honeydew honey from the Strandzha region), Bulgarian yoghurt and Bulgarian white brined cheese — and two with Protected Geographical Indication: Gornooryahovski sudzhuk (flat sausage from Gorna Oryahovitsa) and Bulgarian rose oil.

The country also has seven products recognised as Traditional Specialities Guaranteed.
