Non-governmental organization calls for ban on advertising unhealthy foods aimed at children

A legal ban on advertising foods high in sugar, fat and salt aimed at children under 18 is what the Association for Affordable and Quality Food is calling for, BNR reporter Vesselina Milanova informed. According to experts, similar regulations have long existed in other European countries and Bulgaria is lagging behind in caring for the health of children.

“In recent months, a number of European countries have taken bold and long-awaited steps towards creating a healthier food environment with a particular focus on protecting children and vulnerable groups in society,” the association states, giving examples from different countries. In some of them, the legislative framework is also intended to cover digital platforms, including social networks and influencer marketing channels, which have so far remained almost completely unregulated.

“These measures are a real commitment to the health of citizens and are a response to the growing levels of chronic diseases, obesity and eating disorders, especially among children,” the association points out. Experts believe that the state should also undertake national information campaigns in support of healthy eating.
