Population density in Bulgaria is 58 people per square kilometer

The highest number of people per square kilometer in this country is in Sofia, Blagoevgrad and Plovdiv, BGNES reports.

There are 58 people per sq. km in the country, according to data from the National Statistical Institute for the end of last year. In urbanized areas, the population density is 1214.7 people per sq. km – 6.2 less than in 2023. The highest density in urbanized areas is reported in the districts of Sofia – 5022 people per sq. km, Blagoevgrad – 1999.2, and Plovdiv – 1830.9, and the lowest – in the districts of Vidin – 534.9, Dobrich – 565.5, and Targovishte – 613.6.

The territory of Bulgaria, calculated on the basis of digital models of the country's cadastral map, is 110,996.76 sq. km. According to the way of permanent use of land, the largest share is occupied by agricultural territories - 54.5%, and forests - 33.3% of the total area of ​​the country. Urbanized territories cover nearly 5,279.4 sq. km or 4.8% of the country's territory. The size of protected areas is 2,288.88 sq. km or 2.06%.
