17,603 dogs were caught in the country in 2024 under municipal programmes to control the stray dog population. 3,778 of them, or nearly 22%, were adopted, according to the report on the implementation of the 2024 National Programme for Controlling the Population of Stray Dogs, adopted by the Council of Ministers. The highest adoption rates were reported in Burgas, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, Pernik, Sofia and Ruse.
There has been a steady downward trend in the number of caught and adopted animals over the past three years, the document reports. The data show that the number of dogs caught in 2024 is down 10% compared to 2023 and 12% compared to 2022.
Among the measures in the program to curb the stray animal population are the registration, microchipping and neutering of pets, especially when their owners cannot care for the offspring.
