Trade unions will start monitoring the prices of basic goods on a monthly basis

In the months preceding Bulgaria's accession to the Eurozone, the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), one of the country's largest trade unions, has started to conduct monthly price surveys of 20 basic goods from the 'small consumer basket'. This monitoring is in line with the Memorandum of Cooperation signed a week ago between the union and the government regarding the introduction of the euro and the prevention of unjustified price hikes for goods and services, as reported by journalist Maria Kostova.

Following the publication of positive convergence reports on Bulgaria's readiness to join the eurozone on 1 January 2026 by the European Commission and the European Central Bank, CITUB is demanding that an additional €31 million be allocated in the budget to fund a 5% wage increase from 1 July in several underfunded sectors, including public media outlets such as BNR, BNT and BTA.
