According to data from the European Environment Agency published by the European Commission and reported by BNR correspondent in Brussels Angelina Piskova, Bulgaria ranks second in the EU for bathing water quality in 2024.
The report states that 97.9% of the country's surveyed water bodies are of "excellent" quality. Only Cyprus has a higher percentage, at 99.2%.
The assessment covers 96 bathing sites in Bulgaria — 92 on the Black Sea coast and four inland, including rivers and lakes. In addition, 1% of the waters were rated as 'good', 1% as 'satisfactory', and no waters were found to be of poor quality.
