Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov led the Bulgarian delegation at the recently concluded NATO Summit in The Hague. Speaking to journalists, he stated that an agreement had been reached — with Bulgaria’s support — for each allied country to raise its defence spending to 5% of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 2035, the government press service reported.

According to the prime minister, 3.5% will be allocated to direct defence expenditure, while 1.5% will go towards additional defence-related costs, such as investments, technology, know-how transfer and dual-use infrastructure. Zhelyazkov added that there are no annual targets — what matters is achieving the overall goal by 2035. A national plan for defence investments is to be developed.
