"I think we have an excellent result in the plenary just a few moments ago and 531 members voted “for” Bulgaria to join the Eurozone and paving the last steps of what we have been saying for a long time, that the euro means security and stability". This was commented on by EP President Roberta Metsola for the Bulgarian National Radio at the press conference immediately after the vote earlier on in the European Parliament on Bulgaria's Eurozone accession.

"There was an attempt to block this vote today, but this attempt was not successful. So the message to all those concerned in this regard is clear and unequivocal", EP President Metsola further commented.

"On the difficulties and the questions, we have a lot of Bulgarian citizens who ask us these questions and we need to answer them. We need to asnwer them by saying that Bulgaria has shown an incredible commitment, by seeing the resounding success after so many years of being outside that Bulgaria shows inside the Schengen area, a decision that was taken last year.

By having achieved already substantial progress by full economic convergence,  by saying the truth that the LEV has been linked to the euro for more than 25 years, so Bulgaria is not starting from zero.

I believe and I know because I went through this debate in my country when the euro was introduced and the concerns were similar that we need to counter them with facts  and honest debates as to what is true and what is not", said EP President Metsola

When asked by the Bulgarian National Radio how Denmark, which is presenting the priorities for the Danish presidency at this EP session, views the enlargement of the eurozone, as it itself is outside the eurozone, Ms. Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Denmark, said:

"Denmark as a member state we have an opt out when it comes to the euro. So I don’t think it is up to me to give any advice or engage in specific questions but as a member of the European Council we support the work hat has been done from Bulgaria and from the Commission when it comes to this question. "
