Forestry workers protest near Trakia highway for higher salaries

Over 500 employees of state forestry and hunting farms have gone out in protest at kilometer 119 of the Trakia highway. They have currently gathered at a gas station on the Trakia highway near the Plovdiv exit in the direction of Sofia.

The protesters intended to completely block traffic on both lanes of the highway, but they were forbidden to do so. Nearly 200 officers from the Gendarmerie and the police were deployed against them to prevent people from going on the highway. Clashes broke out between law enforcement and protesters.

The vice president of the organization that organized the protest - the Confederation of Bulgarian Trade Unions (KITUB), Todor Kapitanov, has been detained for questioning, BNR correspondent Kremena Daneva reported.

The protesters are demanding the stabilization of state-owned enterprises, an increase in wages in the structures, and the provision of healthy and safe working conditions. They insist that the proposal of the Minister of Agriculture Georgi Tahov to increase their salaries by an average of 15% from June 1 be respected.

If their demands are not heard at today's protest, the protesters are ready for effective strike action and refusal to participate in extinguishing fires.
