The National Assembly has elected Velislava Delcheva as Ombudsman. Delcheva, whose nomination was put forward by GERB/SDS, was elected out of 6 nominations with 123 votes “in favour”, 92 “against”, 5 MPs abstained. Delcheva was sworn in at the National Assembly. Her nomination got the support of the parliamentary groups of GERB/SDS, DPS-New Beginning, BSP-United Left and There Is Such a People (ITN). The term of office of the Ombudsman is 5 years.
Veliclava Delcheva is a jurist with 20 years of experience, mostly in the sphere of reform of Bulgaria’s judiciary. She has worked as an international expert at the Council of Europe and the UN Development Programme in spheres such as children’s rights and legal aid. She has worked as a legal expert at the Constitutional Court, and is currently employed at Ministry of Justice’s Strategic Development and Programmes department.
