A group of citizens gathered outside the Commission for Anti-Corruption (CAC)'s building to demand the resignation of Anton Slavchev, the commission's acting chair, and the body's complete abolition. The protest was organised by the civil movement Boec, according to the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).
The demonstration was sparked by the arrest of Blagomir Kotsev, the mayor of Varna, and the Commission's investigation into him.
"Let's stop at least one 'mafia bludgeon'. We insist on the immediate resignation of Anton Slavchev and the dissolution of the CAC. It is being used as a tool for settling scores and protecting crimes committed by Delyan Peevski and Boyko Borissov,” said Georgi Georgiev of Boec.
The protest escalated when demonstrators attempted to submit a complaint to the commission against Georgi Petrov, a municipal councillor from Kyustendil, for allegedly living beyond his means. They were stopped at the entrance by a police cordon and one protester was arrested.
Shortly afterwards, Nikolay Denkov, co-chair of the parliamentary group of We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB), submitted the complaint, according to Dobromir Videv, a reporter from Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).
