Bulgaria’s head of state, Rumen Radev, says it is too soon to discuss the presidential election

President Rumen Radev said on Tuesday it was too soon to discuss the 2026 presidential election, including potential candidates such as current Vice President Iliana Yotova, backed by the opposition Socialist Party (BSP).

'As Ms Yotova herself said, it is too early to talk about presidential elections. There are so many other things to be decided in the country. These are important elections, certainly, but as has been said, we’ll talk about that when the time comes,' he told reporters in Sozopol, according to the state news agency BTA.

In late July, Yotova dismissed speculation about her possible candidacy after BSP deputy chairman Kaloyan Pargov said the party would support her if she ran. She said that talk of the election was driven by political forces seeking to retain power and curb the independence of the presidency. 'I cannot sing in this choir,' she said at the time.

Radev is serving his second consecutive term as Bulgaria’s head of state. The constitution limits presidents to two terms.
