Antimonopoly Commission requests from retail chains data on pricing over spiking food prices

Photo: BTA

The Commission for the Protection of Competition has launched a survey into the market of essential food products to find out the reasons for the increase in the price of the goods. To this end, the antimonopoly body has requested from the retail chains complete data on sales, prices and promotions of basic food products such as milk, cheese, eggs, oil, flour, meat and mineral water for the period from July 21 to August 4, 2025, as well as on promotions for the said products.

In addition, the chains must provide their forecasts for retail prices and their anticipated price increases by mid-August.

The Commission for the Protection of Competition will try to clarify whether the price increase is economically justified or is due to unfair and anti-competitive practices. If violations are found, sanctions are envisaged, including up to 10% of its total turnover for the last financial year. The analysis is being conducted in the context of the upcoming introduction of the euro and is aimed at protecting consumers from unlawful price increases.
