According to the US, there is no change in the observance of human rights in Bulgaria

There are no significant changes in the human rights situation in Bulgaria, according to the report on human rights in the world in 2024 by the US Department of State.

Significant human rights issues included credible reports of arbitrary or unlawful killings, and torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment, the report reads.

The Bulgarian government has taken measures to identify and punish officials who have committed human rights violations, but these actions have often been insufficient, the department reports.

There is corporate and political pressure, an ineffective and corrupt judicial system, and non-transparent management of resources intended to support the media, which seriously harms media pluralism, the document notes, but adds that the constitutional right to freedom of expression is generally guaranteed, BTA reports.
