CITUB trade union: Mechanism for forming mark-ups on goods remains unclear 4 months before the introduction of the euro

Small retail outlets maintain lower prices compared to large chains, with differences ranging from 1 to 10%. This is one of the conclusions of the CITUB trade union's monthly monitoring of the prices of goods from the so-called small consumer basket.

The monitored goods are 21, with a 7% increase in the price of coffee and almost 10% increase in lemons.

Lyuboslav Kostov, director of the Institute for Social and Trade Union Research at the CITUB, commented that there are serious deviations in retail and wholesale prices, with the typical mark-up on products being between 19 and 70% of goods in retail trade. He called for clarification of the mechanism for forming these high mark-ups.

On a monthly basis, prices in the small consumer basket are being held back due to the drop in prices for some basic goods, the CITUB reports.
