The demographic crisis in Bulgaria is deepening

The aging of Bulgaria’s population continues to deepen, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy stated in a press release.The data comes from the 2023–2024 Report on the implementation of the National Strategy for Active Ageing in Bulgaria (2019–2030), which has been published for public consultation.

According to national statistics, the demographic situation in Bulgaria for the 2023–2024 period is characterized by a continuing population decline and aging, low birth rates and high overall mortality. As of the end of 2024, 1,544,245 people in Bulgaria are aged 65 and over, accounting for 24% of the country’s population. Compared to 2011, this share has increased by 5.5%, and for every 100 people of working age, there are 61 people in non-working age.
