The Ministry of Interior is setting up a special operations group to combat money laundering, the Interior Ministry has announced, citing Minister of the Interior Daniel Mitov.

At a working meeting with US Chargé d'affaires in Bulgaria H. Martin McDowell and the embassy security team, Minister Mitov announced that the group would include police officers from the General Directorate National Police, the General Directorate Combating Organized Crime, as well as from other Bulgarian authorities and services.

The Interior Ministry has announced, on its website, that the group will be headed by Senior Commissioner Yavor Serafimov, Deputy Director of the General Directorate National Police.

Improving the effective fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, as well as taking Bulgaria off the MONEYVAL grey list is among the Interior Ministry’s priorities, as set down in the programme of the Zhelyazkov cabinet, the announcement reads.

Setting up a special operations group is the first step that will significantly improve the quality of the investigations conducted and will assist in the implementation of the government’s priorities, Daniel Mitov said.
