Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov's attendance at a military parade in China provoked a strong reaction from We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB), who submitted a declaration to the National Assembly.

Speaking from the parliamentary rostrum, Elisaveta Belobradova of PP-DB questioned Mr Zafirov's motives for attending the event and demanded his resignation, as well as an explanation from Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and the GERB party.

“We are outraged by Mr Zafirov's complete lack of principles, whether as a government member, state representative, public figure or Bulgarian citizen,” Belobradova emphasised. “Even if the prime minister was not aware of the circumstances surrounding Mr Zafirov's presence at the parade in advance, the fact that another cabinet member, Mr Ivan Ivanov, was also in China clearly means that someone must take responsibility.”

“Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Atanas Zafirov should resign as Deputy Prime Minister if Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov did not know about his visit to China, We Continue the Change Chair Assen Vassilevsaid, quoted by BTA.
