Premier Zhelyazkov: Eurozone debate in Bulgaria is mainly political

The debate on the introduction of the euro and Bulgaria’s membership in the Eurozone is more of a political issue than an economic or social one, Premier Rosen Zhelyazkov said during an event in Blagoevgrad within the National Information Campaign for the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria.

The Prime Minister pointed out that by adopting the euro, Bulgaria will become part of a market of nearly 400 million people. "We are not adopting a foreign currency, we are adopting our European currency", said Premier Zhelyazkov. He added that the long-term benefits are much greater than the short-term PR actions used by certain political forces for fearmongering. The purpose of these informational campaigns is to overcome the fears of ordinary citizens regarding the introduction of the euro, said Rosen Zhelyazkov and predicted that in one year, this period will be viewed in a completely different way.
