Bulgaria urges new Danube bridge at Silistra to strengthen EU transport corridor

A new bridge over the Danube River between Bulgaria and Romania is needed in Silistra, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Grozdan Karadzhov said during a visit to the town. “In addition to the second bridge in Ruse, there should be two more. One of them must be in Silistra,” he explained.

According to Karadzhov, the bridge would serve the “South-North” corridor from Greece to Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. He emphasised that this corridor is a priority for the EU, adding that the current circuitous route via Ruse, Giurgiu, Bucharest and Constanța to the north is, in his words, “a transport paradox.”

The minister also expressed his readiness to hold talks with his Romanian counterpart and at the European Commission level to secure Bucharest’s approval for the construction of the additional bridges. “This is not a question of funding or willingness — we will provide both. The issue is that Romania has no desire to move forward,” Karadzhov stated.
