Attempts to cross the Turkish-Bulgarian border illegally has fallen by more than three-quarters, PM says

Bulgaria is guarding Europe’s borders “extremely well and successfully,” Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said in Copenhagen ahead of the European Political Community meeting, the government press service reported.


He noted that, compared to 2024, attempts to illegally cross the Bulgarian-Turkish border had fallen by more than 75%. “We have practically no illegal migration posing a threat to European security,” the Prime Minister assured.


'Our efforts are focused on returning illegal migrants to their countries of origin.' Many EU countries support these policies, which Sofia has defended for years. Europe’s security depends not only on strong border protection through physical force and technology — where we invest heavily, including with EU funding — but also on the right policies to prevent all attempts at illegal migration to the continent,” he added.
