The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has vehemently condemned the vandalism against the synagogue in Varna and the Monument of Gratitude in Burgas, which is a token of gratitude for the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews during World War II, the Ministry writes on its website.

It is absolutely inadmissible for such premeditated crimes to cast a shadow over Bulgaria’s historic achievements, something the Bulgarian people are justifiably proud of, the position reads. Such acts are not inherent to Bulgarian society, and obviously aim to bring tension and artificial polarization among Bulgarian citizens and, for this reason, cannot be left without consequences. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges the competent authorities to take timely action to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Two months after the previous act of vandalism, on 8 October, the Monument of Gratitude in the centre of Burgas is once again desecrated with green paint, the Centre for Jewish-Bulgarian Cooperation Alef says.
