North Macedonia urged to abide by EU commitments

Candidates for EU membership must abide by the criteria and conditions they have agreed to themselves. This was stated by Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev after a meeting in Sofia with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, BGNES reported.

"A spirit of good neighborliness must be maintained and international agreements must be respected. We have no disagreement here that our western neighbor must take the first step by changing the constitution," Georgiev said in reference to Skopje and the inclusion of Bulgarians in the constitution of the former Yugoslav republic. The minister reminded that the completion of Transport Corridor No. 8 through Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria is extremely important because it is "the main connection between the Black and Adriatic Seas for NATO."

For his part, Johann Wadephul stated Germany's support for "the European integration of the Western Balkans, Moldova and Ukraine - step by step, but within the framework of the accession criteria."
